About Motherboard Drivers

Motherboard drivers are a bit different than most other types of drivers. Where most drivers only run a single device, motherboard drivers must run all the components of the board, and to synchronize them so they don’t cancel each other out. These include PCI slots, IDE and/or SATA connectors, memory slots, processor socket, onboard video and sound (if available), and any other component attached to the computer such as USB and firewire jacks.

Many of the basic motherboard drivers are hardwired into the CMOS. These only allow the system board to recognize the system devices so that the operating system will be able to “see” them. Still, you must have the actual motherboard drivers in order for your computer and operating system to communicate. Other devices which come on some motherboards, such as an SLI bridge or RAID controller, will have to be installed with the motherboard driver installation CD.

Imagine that you have a remote controlled car. In that car a crucial chip is missing. So, the remote is sending signals to the car, and the car is receiving them – but without that chip the car can’t process them into the commands to move.

In this light, the next time you install (or have installed) a new motherboard, be sure you have and install the proper motherboard drivers. If you’re having the board installed, be sure that the company installing it gives you the driver installation disk. It will do no good to put in a new system board if the board itself, the attached devices, and the operating system cannot work together.

Also, be sure to get all the drivers for your current motherboard. Operating systems, such as Windows, recommend that you reformat your hard drive and reinstall the OS at least every six months. While it is possible to go for longer periods, periodic system dumps are a good idea. The OS will only install basic drivers for the motherboard.

To realize the full potential of your motherboard, get the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) drivers.
